This film adaptation of the Graham Greene novel features Alec Guinness as British expatriate Jim Wormold who, while living in pre-revolutionary Cuba, is recruited as a spy by British intelligence agent Hawthorne (Noel Coward). Wormold invents information on agents and events for which he is paid, and he uses his ill-begotten money for his daughter Milly (Jo Morrow) to appease her expensive tastes. The crooked police chief, Capt. Segura (Ernie Kovacs), believes that Wormold is truly a spy, and he finds Millie attractive. Wormold's reputation accelerates, and–in spite of his false reports–he actually performs a service for Britain.
