Ernest Hemmingway's story is the springboard for this tale about killers Al and Max (Charles McGraw and William Conrad) who murder an aging prizefighter Ole "Swede" Anderson (Burt Lancaster). Insurance investigator Jim Rearden (Edmond O'Brien) looks for "Swede's" beneficiary, and, in a series of flashbacks, he connects "Swede" to an unsolved robbery. It was "Swede" and his ex-girlfriend Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner) who conspired to take the goods, double-cross crime boss Big Jim Colfax (Albert Dekker), and then take off on their own. And, no, they do not live happily ever after.

The Killers   1964     3 stars  User Rating      N/R, 95 min.
Genre: Action / Drama / Mystery
aka: Ernest Hemingway's The Killers

Director: Don Siegel
Cast: Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, John Cassavetes, Ronald Reagan, Clu Gulager, Claude Akins, Norman Fell, Virginia Christine, Don Haggerty, Robert Phillips, Kathleen O'Malley, Jimmy Joyce, Davis Roberts, Ted Jacques, Irvin Mosley Jr.

Auto racing provides the setting for this story of evil in a fast-paced world involving under-the-table money exchanges. Professional killers Charlie (Lee Marvin) and Lee (Clu Gulager) force their way into a school for the blind and kill teacher Johnny North (John Cassavetes). Johnny had once been a Formula One race car driver and had been involved in a million dollar heist. Charlie and Lee seek out the identity of the man behind the robbery, and the trail leads to Johnny's friend Earl Sylvester (Claude Akins) and beautiful Sheila Farr (Angie Dickinson)–and then to the low-down, dirty, cruel crime boss, Jack Browning (Ronald Reagan). This was Reagan's last movie.    1 User Review
