This film is based on the autobiography of Janet Frame (played by Alexia Keogh as a child and by Karen Fergusson as a teenager) who endured a bizarre childhood and was misdiagnosed with mental illness. Shy Janet, (now played by Kerry Fox) is estranged from those around her, and she fails at becoming a schoolteacher. Misdiagnosed with schizophrenia, Janet is committed to an institution for eight years. After leaving the institution, Janet meets Frank Sargeson (Martyn Sanderson) who encourages her to travel. She follows his advice and finds enough peace and security to enable her to become a successful writer.
