This is the story of those involved in the slavery issue that divided the United States during a difficult time in history. While sailing from Cuba to the U.S. in 1839, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) leads a revolt aboard the Spanish slave ship, Amistad. After sailing for two months with no navigational aids, they are captured and sent to prison. Former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman) talks to lawyer Roger Baldwin (Matthew McConaughy), and he takes the case. When the case moves to the Supreme Court, former President John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) comes out of retirement and defends them, while pro-slavery President Martin Van Buren (Nigel Hawthorne) believes they should be sacrificed. Anthony Hopkins was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. 2 User Reviews

What an awesome movie, just watched on TCM, excellent acting and cast. Great history information that you don't learn in grade school history. No one at all should have been treated like that; such a touching movie.
