As martial arts films go, this one is excellent as it relates the story of the quest for a legendary sword–Green Destiny–that has been stolen from the rightful martial arts owner Li Mu Bai (Yun-Fat Chow). Ready to retire, Li had given his sword to fellow martial arts friend Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) to deliver to Sir Te (Sihung Lung) in Peking. But, the sword is stolen from Yu, and she is now in hot pursuit. Li arrives on the scene and, in their world of martial arts action, Yu and Li search together for the missing sword and might even find love at the same time. Dazzling. The film won four Oscars including Best Foreign Film, Art Direction, and Cinematography. It was also nominated for Best Picture and Director.
