In this sequel to "Elizabeth" (1998), Cate Blanchett again takes the title role, and Geoffrey Rush returns as Elizabeth's closest advisor, Sir Francis Walsingham. Elizabeth has now been Queen of England for 27 years and, amidst the changing political and religious moods in 16th-century Europe, is struggling to maintain her position while Spanish King Philip II (Jordi Molla) plots to restore Catholicism to Protestant England. Meanwhile, the story emphasizes the personal side of Elizabeth including her flirtation with Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen) as well as the political intrigue between Elizabeth and her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots (Samantha Morton). The film received an Academy Award for Best Costume Design and was nominated for Best Actress (Blanchett).
