In this film, based on George Barr McCutcheon's novel, a World War II veteran Monty Brewster (Dennis O'Keefe) arrives home and learns that he has inherited one million dollars–the catch is he must spend it all within two months or he will not receive the rest of his inheritance. Another stipulation is that he cannot tell anyone about the inheritance. Brewster goes on a spending spree putting his money into bad investments, all of which turn into surprising profits. In the midst of his frenzy to spend the money, personal problems arise when he must postpone his wedding to Peggy (Helen Walker) but cannot tell her why. This version of George Barr McCutcheon's novel involves baseball player Montgomery Brewster (Richard Pryor) who will inherit $300 million if he can obey the will's stipulations, which include spending all of the money within one month and keeping the inheritance a secret. His friends–baseball catcher Spike Nolan and girlfriend Angela (John Candy and Lonette McKee)–do not understand the reason behind Brewster's spending spree and try to help, but that task proves overwhelming.
