Two intertwined stories unfold–one in modern New York and the other in Oklahoma and Macedonia 100 years previously. When a small-time burglar breaks into an apartment, an elderly woman, Angela (Rosemary Murphy), subdues him and forces the burglar to listen to a story of her family. This involves the tale of two brothers (Joseph Fiennes and David Wenham), one a ruthless, fun-loving killer and the other a righteous Christian, who become rivals not only for a woman but in a Macedonian conflict.
