Enrico (Nicolas Cage), an Italian soldier who is part of the occupation forces in Ethiopia in the mid-1930s, suffers from a toothache and is shown a shortcut to a military base. He gets lost and comes upon an oasis where he sees a woman bathing. He rapes her but, feeling guilty, spends the night with her. He accidentally kills her while trying to shoot a wild animal and then buries her. After continuing his journey, he sees two men in white clothing similar to the girl's and then finds out that they are lepers. When a sore that won't heal occurs on Enrico's hand, he seeks forgiveness. This offbeat story was based on a 1949 novel by Ennio Flaiano.

Based on John Grisham's novel, this story involves a Black father, Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson), whose 10-year-old daughter is raped by two White rednecks in the town of Canton, Mississippi. When the rednecks are brought to court, Carl appears with a rifle and kills the defendants. Carl's friend, lawyer Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughy), agrees to defend him and receives help from young law clerk Ellen Roark (Sandra Bullock).
