The story is about an archaeological dig during which British archaeologist John Banning (Peter Cushing) desecrates the tomb of Princess Ananka (Yvonne Furneaux) and awakens Ananka's lover Kharis (Christopher Lee) who was buried with her. Kharis, the Mummy, returns to life and follows Banning back to England to seek revenge. Dire consequences ensue when Kharis finds that Banning's wife (also played by Furneaux) very closely resembles Ananka.
