Newspaper editor Doyle Magee (Gary Merrill) takes Brian under his wing, but Brian has problems with farmer Tobias Brown (Lee Marvin) who, despite the fact that he cares about Brian, treats him with cruelty. Matters rise to the fore at the annual trotting race in this story based on John Burress' novel.
