Shown through flashbacks, the story begins when the Civil War ends, and young Jane escapes from the KKK. As a newly freed woman, she fights to overcome adversity—even enduring the murder of her husband by racists in the North. Finally, she takes a positive position in the Civil Rights Movement. This television movie won nine Emmy Awards, including Best Actress (Tyson), Director, and Screenplay.
