When Gallimard is promoted to vice consul, Song spies on him for the Communists. Finally, Gallimard sees Song nude and flees from the relationship. Later, Gallimard is arrested and put on trial for treason, and the affair with Song is revealed while Gallimard maintains that he had no idea of the ruse.
