During the 19th century, Ceddie Erroll (Freddie Bartholomew) is living in Brooklyn with his widowed mother (Dolores Costello). Freddy's father had been disowned by his father, the Earl of Dorincourt (C. Aubrey Smith), when he married an American. Now, Ceddie has become the heir to the Earl's estate, and the Earl accepts Ceddie as Lord Fauntleroy and invites him and his mother to visit. Ceddie and his mother do travel to England, and he begins to win over his grumpy grandfather who still has problems accepting Ceddie's mother because she is an American. When a false claim is made on the estate, Ceddie's American friends, including Dick Tipton (Mickey Rooney), step in to help, and the Earl finally accepts Ceddie's mother, and everything ends happily.
