  This fast-paced gangster film highlights James Cagney as the ruthless gangster Ralph Cotter. Cotter and his partner, Jinx Raynor (Steve Brodie), break out of jail, and then Cotter murders him. He returns to his life of crime, which even involves robberies and blackmailing crooked cops Inspector Charles Weber (Ward Bond) and Lt. John Reese (Barton MacLane). Cotter kills Brodie's sister Holiday's (Barbara Payton) husband (Neville Brand) and later beats her up when she turns him down. When Cagney prepares to leave town with another woman, Holiday kills him, the crooked cops are exposed, and justice is finally served.
