Thomas Howell) picks up psychotic hitchhiker John Ryder (Rutger Hauer), and, from that point on, his excursion turns into a nightmare. John points a switchblade at Jim's crotch, but when Jim escapes, a game of cat-and-mouse begins. John is a serial killer, and he leaves corpses of victims in their cars for Jim to discover, and Jim is framed as the chief suspect in the killings.
