As a solution to her problems, Frances resorts to alcohol, and her mother has her committed to an insane asylum. While in the asylum, a brain operation is performed on Frances, and she is raped by inmates. Finally, Frances is released to her mother's custody where she must remain until she comes up with a legal way to break away from her mother. Lange won an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the rebellious actress who was silenced by the Hollywood establishment.
