"Fletch" Fletcher (Chevy Chase) is a big city newspaperman who goes undercover and poses as a bum. He stumbles onto a story when Santa Monica aviation executive Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson), who has bone cancer, offers him $50,000 to murder him so that his family can collect on his life insurance. Fletch believes that there is more to the story and, before long, uncovers a drug dealing connection between Stanwyk and police Chief Karlin (Joe Don Baker).
