Frederic Henry and Helen Hayes in the role of nurse Catherine Barkley. Frederic and Catherine meet and fall in love in war-torn Italy. Their romance leads to Maj. Rinaldi (Adolphe Menjou) becoming jealous and having Catherine transferred to Milan. When Frederic is wounded and taken to Catherine's hospital, the romance resumes. Later, Henry returns to the war while the now-pregnant Catherine travels to Switzerland.
