Father Karras is sure that Megan is possessed by the devil and asks exorcist Father Merrin (Max von Sydow) to come to her aid by staging an exorcism. Many horrors ensue as Father Merrin confronts the supernatural spirit. This film caused quite a stir at the time of its release. Academy Awards were received for Best Writing and Sound as well as eight other nominations including Best Picture, Actress (Burstyn), Supporting Actor (Miller) and Actress (Blair), and Director.
