Also like today, his affairs lead to tragic ends. Jean Simmons is excellent as Sister Sharon. Burt Lancaster took Best Actor honors at the Academy Awards and Shirley Jones walked away with an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. An Oscar was also presented for Best Writing, and the film was nominated for Best Picture and Music.
