The mission fails, and the President devises Plan B to hold a lottery in which the winners will be sent to giant caves in the hope that IF they can survive the comet's impact, they will continue to propagate the human race. Fourteen-year-old Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood) discovered the comet, and he and his family are given a pass to enter the cave, but his girlfriend Sarah (Leelee Sobieski) and her family must be left behind.
