One of Huston's best films, this is the adaptation of a James Joyce short story about the reminiscences of a group of friends attending a party. Spinsters Aunt Kate (Helena Carroll) and Aunt Julia (Cathleen Delany) live in Dublin and are giving a New Year's Eve party in 1904. A young couple, Gabriel and Gretta Conroy (Donal McCann and Anjelica Huston), are enjoying the party until Gretta is prodded by Kate and Julia to remember her long-lost lover. As secrets from Greta's past are revealed, Gabriel begins to question the lack of passion in his own life.
