Rawlings leaves her husband and moves to a Florida orange grove where she begins life anew hoping to find needed peace to write her story. Among her new-found friends are her servant Geechee (Alfre Woodard), her lover Norton (Peter Coyote), and father and daughter Marsh and Ellie Turner (Rip Torn and Dana Hill)—all of whom give her the inspiration to write her novel. The film received four Academy Award nominations including Torn for Best Supporting Actor and Woodard for Best Supporting Actress.
