The astronauts—(James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, and Sam Waterston)—are removed from the spaceship before it is launched and taken to a studio where they must pretend to be on the journey to Mars. But, journalist Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould) becomes suspicious and investigates the conspiracy, which will go so far as to end the astronauts' lives as the means of keeping the hoax a secret.
