Finally driven to the breaking point, David becomes a crusader, "The Rectifier," breaking into cars and cutting lines in cars and stores to silence the alarm systems. He continues his vandalism—until he is arrested. His wife Helen (Bridget Moynahan) is disturbed by his actions, believes that he is having a nervous breakdown, and their marriage ends. But, that doesn't stop David. With encouragement from sympathetic Ekaterina (Margarita Levieva), David takes his case to New York's unsympathetic Mayor Schneer (William Hurt) who outmaneuvers David's efforts and also tries to gain the affections of Ekaterina.
