Soon after he arrives, Carter becomes involved with the Hardwicke family—mother Sarah (Meg Ryan) who has discovered a lump in her breast, and her two daughters, teenager Lucy (Kristen Stewart) and younger sister Paige (Makenzie Vega). The Hardwickes live just across the street from Phyllis, and Carter makes himself available listening to their problems, giving good advice, and even learning something about himself in the process.
