Paul does gain success and turns to stage actress Simone St. Claire (Margot Grahame) who takes him under her wing and marries him. But, the marriage is ill-fated, and John murders Simone's lover and is sent to Devil's Island. He manages to escape, revisits Germaine, and is inspired to write an opera about his experiences.
