Grant's childhood, he tells the story of the trauma suffered when a young Swaziland youth, Ralph Compton (Zac Fox), is shipped off to boarding school after his parents (Gabriel Byrne and Miranda Richardson) are divorced. Ralph (now played by Nicholas Hoult) returns home two years later and finds his father now married to an American (Emily Watson), that he has turned to the bottle, and Swaziland is on the verge of receiving independence from Great Britain. Ralph finds peace in his stressful world by embracing the theatrical world.
