Monte (Tom Selleck) and pal Chet (Keith Carradine) are cowhands and bronco busters, a dying breed in Wyoming near the end of the 19th century. Monte's girlfriend "Countess" Martine (Isabella Rossellini) tries to convince him to take a regular job, but Monte still yearns for the scant wide-open space that remains. When a cowboy is laid off, Monte deals with one last confrontation.
