Adding to his misery, his estranged father is killed in a train accident. Luckily, a middle-aged loner, Gideon (David Morse)—an ex-football coach and now a newspaper deliverer—is putting together a rough-and-tumble six-man football team, and Roy catches his eye. Gideon becomes a good substitute father for Roy, but their relationship grows more intimate.
