Two shoeshine boys (Franco Interlenghi and Rinaldo Smordoni) hustle American soldiers to have their shoes shined. The orphaned boys dream of making a better life in war-torn, post-World War II Rome and have saved much of their money. But their dreams are shattered after they are talked into a shady deal and end up in a bleak reformatory.
