The story traces the life of World War II veteran Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif) as he returns to his home in the Deep South and finds his parents' home boarded up. Searching for spiritual meaning, Hazel forms his own Church of Truth and, despite being the grandson of a religious zealot (John Huston), Hazel becomes the preacher in his Christ-less church.
