In 1939, they and other passengers sail from Europe looking for freedom. Their ship is not allowed to dock in ports in the Western Hemisphere, and the voyage proves fruitless when they are forced to return to Germany. Lee Grant received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
