It all begins when Gittes is hired by another Jake—L.A. realtor tycoon Jake Berman (Harvey Keitel)—who suspects his wife Kitty (Meg Tilly) of cheating on him. They plot to have Berman walk in on Kitty and her lover while Gittes records the conversation from the next room. But, plans go awry when Berman kills Kitty's lover—and things are not always what they seem as Gittes is about to discover.
