  Sydney Carton (Chris Sarandon) has fallen love with Lucie (Alice Krige), but she marries the aristocrat Charles Damay (also played by Chris Sarandon), not knowing of Sydney's love for her. Later, the seeds for the French Revolution are sown, and Charles has been arrested and is condemned to die by the guillotine. Sydney hatches a selfless plot to replace Charles and allow him to return to Lucie.
