Sarah (Glenn Close) and her husband Jacob (Christopher Walken) are surviving with their children Anna (Lexi Randall), Caleb (Christopher Bell), and Cassie (Emily Osment) when a strange man appears at their door. The man is John (Jack Palance), Jacob's father, who had abandoned the family when Jacob was a young boy. His arrival causes distress in the family, but they try to work through problems to make John a member of the family.
