Julie Adams (Irene Dunne) listens to the song "Penny Serenade," which is the song that was playing when she first met her husband Roger (Cary Grant). That song and others cause Julie to remember her life with Roger, and the story is told through flashbacks. Their courtship, marriage, adoption of Trina (Jane Biffle), and then sudden death of Trina (now played by Eva Lee Kuney) at age six are shown through Julie's memories. Grant received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
