Once an ordained minister, Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank) has given up the church, but her assistant, Ben (Idris Elba) is a dedicated believer who helps Katherine as she travels the world debunking miracles. When Katherine answers the call from school teacher Doug (David Morrissey), she and Ben travel to Doug's Louisiana town where among the weird happenings are a river turning red, a young boy found dead, and dead frogs falling from trees. What is going on?
