  Two couples–Phyllis (Julie Christie) and Lucky (Nick Nolte) and Marianne (Lara Flynn Boyle) and Jeffrey (Jonny Lee Miller)–are suffering because of unhappy marriages. When repair contractor Lucky arrives at Marianne and Jeffrey's apartment, Marianne becomes the object serviced. Meanwhile, Jeffrey finds comfort in Lucky's wife Phyllis who is only too happy to take on the mother role for Jeffrey. Julie Christie received a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
