  After a ten-year absence, Gonzo (Toshiro Mifune) returns to his village as a representative of the new emperor. His mission is to tell the villagers that there will be a cut in taxes, and he plans to bring an end to the villagers' suffering. But, when the army rescinds the tax cut and attacks the village, Gonzo is left with no choice but to lay siege on the army.
