The World War II battle of Iwo Jima is told through the Japanese perspective. Ken Watanabe takes on the role of General Tadamichi Kuribayashi who leads the outnumbered Japanese forces on Iwo Jima. Despite shortages in ammunition, medicine, morale, and men, Kuribayashi gives controversial orders to rally his men for what will prove to be a futile defense of the island against the American forces. The film received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Director.

Clouseau's partner Ponton (Jean Reno) and Clouseau's love interest, Nicole (Emily Mortimer), are also along on the trip from Paris to Rome and help in the bumbling search for the stolen artfacts.
