This film adaptation of Pearl Buck's novel takes place just before China becomes embroiled in World War II. Old traditions are dying in China, but Madame Woo (Luo Yan) clings to the past as she makes plans for her 40th birthday, which includes hiring a concubine to service her husband (Shek Sau). But she must get past the strong American priest, Father Andre (Willem Dafoe), who is determined to honor humans instead of tradition.
