  Emily Bronte's classic tale is reworked, which includes a setting in France in the 1930s. Though only part of the novel is covered, Jacques Rivette's work still makes for interesting viewing. In this version, Heathcliff is now Roch (Lucas Belvaux) who sets tragedy in motion after the woman he loves, Catherine (Fabienne Babe), marries wealthy Olivier (Olivier Torres). Roch seeks revenge leading Catherine into despair and early death, but even death cannot part the ill-fated lovers.

  In this filmed version of Emily Bronte's classic novel, Mr. Earnshaw (Cecil Kellaway) brings home orphaned Heathcliff (Rex Downing) to Wuthering Heights. Earnshaw's son Hindley (Douglas Scott) hates Heathcliff, but daughter Catherine (Sarita Wooton) loves him. Mr. Earnshaw dies, and Hindley takes over forcing Heathcliff to work as a stable boy. Cathy and Heathcliff love each other, but when they grow up, Cathy (now played by Merle Oberon) marries wealthy neighbor Edgar Linton (David Niven). Heathcliff (now played by Laurence Olivier) has left but returns a wealthy man, buys Wuthering Heights from Hindley (now played by Hugh Williams), and marries Edgar's sister Isabella (Geraldine Fitzgerald). Now, Cathy realizes that she cannot forget Heathcliff, and even death cannot part them. Academy Award nominations included Best Picture, Actor (Olivier), Supporting Actress (Geraldine Fitzgerald), and Director.

After, Mr. Earnshaw dies, Cathy and Heathcliff grow up and fall in love. But, Cathy marries wealthy neighbor Edgar Linton (Ian Ogilvy). Meanwhile, Heathcliff, who has left, returns a wealthy man, and Hindley gambles away Wuthering Heights to him. accurate to most of the books plot,could have gone on a bitbird 01/24/2007 
  great dialogue! great location and true to the novel many scenes took place in the kitchen.

Meanwhile, Hendley's sister Cathy and Heathcliff fall in love, but Cathy opts for wealth over love and marries Edgar Linton (Simon Shepherd). Cathy dies in childbirth. Eighteen years later, Cathy's daughter Catherine (also played by Juliette Binoche) meets Heathclliff who forces her to marry his son Linton (Jonathan Firth) so that he will have avenged his enemies by controlling the estate. But, Cathy's ghost appears, Heathcliff dies, and, once again, even death cannot part those ill-fated lovers.

Cathy has second thoughts about her marriage choice, and realizes she has passed up love for what society condones. She becomes deathly ill, but even death cannot part Cathy and Heathcliff.
