The astronauts learn that the apes can walk upright and talk and are far more sophisticated that the humans. When the leader of the apes, Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans), learns that Taylor can also talk, he orders him killed. Now, two apes–scientist Cornelius (Roddy McDowell) and Dr. Zira (Kim Hunter)–help Taylor escape and, in the process, Taylor uncovers the secret of the planet.
