Among those she meets on her trek are alcoholic cop Arnie (David Strathairn) and his partying wife Sue Lynne (Rachel Weisz) who are patrons at a bar Elizabeth works at in Memphis. After Arnie kills himself, Elizabeth comforts Sue Lynne. Later, while working as a cocktail waitress in Nevada, Elizabeth becomes involved with compulsive gambler Leslie (Natalie Portman). Through these lost souls, Elizabeth learns how to conquor her own loneliness.
