James Vanning (Aldo Ray) is on a fishing and hunting trip with his friend Dr. Edward Gurston (Frank Albertson) when they spot a car wreck and stop to help John (Brian Keith) and Red (Rudy Bond). It turns out that John and Red are bank robbers who have stolen $350,000 and are trying to escape. They kill Gurston, but Vanning survives and finds the $350,000 that the robbers mistakenly left behind; however, he loses the money during a blizzard. Now, because his rifle was used in the murder, Vanning is wrongfully accused of the murder. He escapes and is now, with Marie Gardner (Anne Bancroft) in tow, on the run from John and Red, as well as insurance investigator Ben Fraser (James Gregory) whose company's policy covered the bank that was robbed.
