While trying to capture the "North Beach Serial Killer," Burrows' paranoia takes over, he fails to make the arrest, and is fired. Burrows has spent much of his time studying the Darwin Awards books that recognize people who have killed themselves when attempting something foolish, and he offers his knowledge to an insurance company. The company gives Burrows 30 days to prove that he has the ability to distinguish between legitimate and false claims. Off to the Midwest he goes with field agent Siri Tyler (Winona Ryder) and a film school student (Wilmer Valderrama) who is using Burrows for his thesis topic. The investigations begin as the trio runs across more than a few Darwinesque events leading to deaths.
