Abandoned by her mother, 16-year-old Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood) works double shifts at McDonalds in order to support herself. Miranda's father, Charlie (Michael Douglas), suddenly re-enters her life after spending two years in a mental hospital and involves her in his wild plan to uncover hidden gold in their California neighborhood. While institutionalized, Charlie read a diary written by a 17th century Spanish missionary who claimed that doublooms are hidden under what is now the neighborhood Costco. Together, father and daughter go in search of the cache, and, along the way, rekindle their relationship.

They talk, and what would have been a very lonely Sunday becomes a very enjoyable experience. This film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1997 Sundance Festival as well as the screenwriting award.
