Starting with the invasion of Sicily in 1943 and ending with liberation in 1945, each episode shows a slice of life in Italy that includes the Allied liberators.

  Catherine the Great (Binnie Barnes) orders Count Orloff (Richard Greene) to Venice where he is to kidnap her rival, Princess Elizabeth Tarakanova (Valentina Cortese), and bring her back to Russia. While on his assignment, Orloff finds and then falls in love with Elizabeth. Catherine discovers that they are lovers, and complications ensue. Elizabeth's execution is how Catherine chooses to solve the problem–but Orloff has another solution that includes escape and sanctuary.
